Michael P. Smits, 58, a former resident of Syracuse, NY, passed away on May 14, 2025, at Oswego Hospital. Born in Syracuse to the late George and Sally Smits of Camillus, NY, Michael lived a life marked by dedication, humor, and heartfelt connections.
He graduated from Onondaga Community College with an associate degree in Criminal Justice and worked as a Direct Support Assistant with the Central New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office (CNYDDSO). Michael was a passionate supporter of the Dallas Cowboys and a loyal fan of Syracuse Orange football and basketball.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy L. Smits; his stepsons Brandon Nunez and Trevor Nunez, both of Sandy Creek; Thomas Nunez (Ashley) of Oswego; and Donavin "Vinnie" Powless of Mexico, NY. He was a proud step-grandfather to several grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings: Patrick Smits (Stephanie) and Katrina Smits, both of Dallas, TX; Sara Smits King (Lisa, Dan) of Liverpool; and Jennifer Gettino (Joseph) of Camillus. Michael leaves behind several nephews and a niece who will cherish his memory.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Sally Smits; and his sisters Michaela “Goo” Cardinal (Vince) and Stephanie Scheirer.
Michael embraced life with joy and simplicity, finding fulfillment in making others laugh and savoring everyday moments. His warmth and humor touched everyone who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
