Michael D. Kimball, 69, of Orwell, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of May 15, 2025 after a hard fought and courageous battle with cancer.
Mike was born on July 20, 1955 in Watertown, NY to Wayne and Patricia (Warner) Kimball. He was a 1974 graduate of Sandy Creek Central School where he played football, baseball, enjoyed studying American history and was involved in the FFA. He had an amazing sense of humor which his wife did not always appreciate but his children found to be hysterical. Mike was an avid outdoorsman. Hunting, trapping, fishing and just spending time outdoors in general were his favorite. He was a loving, patient father who insisted on teaching his four daughters at a young age to hunt, fish and survive in the wilderness in case, as he joked, “they grow up to be ugly and can’t find husbands to take care of them”. He retired as supervisor for the Happy Valley unit of the Department of Environmental Conservation in April of 2016 and has since been running a small business, ‘Made By Mike’ where he featured hand crafted pack baskets, fishing creels, fur stretchers, trap boxes and lure. In their spare time, he and his wife loved spending time with their family, cooking incredible meals, building dollhouses, camping, walking on the beach and watching thunderstorms.
Michael is survived by a large and loud family including his wife and best friend of 48 years, Penny Bickford Kimball. Together they have 4 daughters who were thankfully able to find husbands. Jessica (Michel) Soluri of Orwell, NY, Erin (Michael) Salzman of Corryton, TN, Hayley (Andrew) Denny of Richland, NY and Meredith (Troy) Gibbons of Sandy Creek, NY. Their daughters also gifted him 13 beautiful grandchildren; Taylor, Allie, Colby, Abrielle, Landon, Byrdie, Haidyn, Emma, Wes, Moxon, Layton, Jase and Casey and 1 great-grandchild, Bennett. He is also survived by his 2 sisters, Kathy (Ronald) Plummer, Melanie (Joseph) Barber and several nieces and nephews.
Mike was predeceased by both of his parents, Pat and Wayne and his older brother Rick.
Services will be held at Summerville Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 20th. Calling hours are set for 1-3:00 with the funeral immediately following. A dinner at the VFW Cable Trail post 8534 in Lacona will begin at approximately 4 PM that same afternoon.
