Karyl J (Bettinger) Moyer

Karyl Bettinger Moyer, aged 75 years, passed away at the Van Duyn rehabilitation center on Sunday, June 16, 2019. She fought hard for seven months but simply could not recover from injuries sustained from a fall on Thanksgiving Day.

Karyl was born July 28, 1943, the eldest daughter of Howard (Bill) and Janet Bettinger of Pulaski, NY. She had younger siblings Michael Bettinger (Chris), Patrick Bettinger (Carolyn), Rebecca Bettinger Artessa, David Bettinger (Janelle) and Abby Bettinger Colvin (Steve), along with beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and grandparents, many of who are predeceased.

Having much love of her large family, Karyl spoke fondly of childhood memories over the years, and often wished that she’d been able to spend more time with them as the years passed. Her favorite memories were of spending time on her grandparents’ farm, and getting into all sorts of trouble with friends, her brothers and her cousin Jack. She adored all of her aunts and uncles and looked forward to every visit as a child. As the eldest, her love for her younger sisters and brothers and their families was immeasurable, and she spoke of them often to her children and grandchildren.  Over the years she spoke kindly of friends and up until the end, was thinking of them and wishing them well.

Karyl attended school in the Pulaski school district and married Carroll Wade, formerly of Putney, VT. Together they had four children, Lisa, Michael, Eric and Kitryn. Several years after the end of her first marriage, she fell in love with Dean P. Moyer of Sandy Creek, and with him raised her youngest daughter and stepchildren, Dawn, Debbie and Dean Moyer Jr. They married in 1985, and were together until unfortunately to everyone’s great sadness, Dean Sr. passed away from cancer in 2002. Karyl was delighted to have 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren who continually added to her joy over the years. Sadly, she is pre-deceased by her loving granddaughter Amelia Wade, which created a very empty place in her heart forever. Karyl was a talented seamstress, doll maker and artist, and spent endless hours creating. The simple, sweet and uninhibited appreciation that she had for the little things in life such as great music, animals, plants, flowers, arts & crafts, a good book or movie, cuddling or creating with a grandchild, family visits at “Pondo” or Red Lobster, playing cards with beloved family and friends, road trips with her sister in law, and shopping at Kohl’s or Michael’s Arts & Crafts with her grandchildren (she had an amazing ability to disappear in a store when it was time to leave).  She was a no-nonsense person who typically spoke her mind, and was self-described as “impulsive”. Especially when combined, these traits often landed her in hot water!  She stood strong behind her ability to “swear like a sailor”, and she was correct, none of the kids were damaged from their early exposure to NC17 rated words.  Karyl was a wonderful grandmother.  She is loved immeasurably, and will be sorely missed by all. Her kind and loving spirit is a legacy that will be carried on by her family.

Karyl leaves to mourn her daughter Lisa Hellenberg (Kurt) and children and families: Ian VanBrocklin (Erin) Makenna, Dylan and Emma; Ashley VanBrocklin (Shaun) and Aubrie Griffith; Colby Hellenberg. Son Michael Wade and children: Heather French and Johnathan Wade; Son Eric Wade (Valerie) and children: Amelia (dec.) and Kara Wade; daughter Kitryn Ellis (David) and children: Conor, Seanán, Clareigh and Audie Ellis; stepdaughter Dawn Moyer Degarmo and child: Trent Degarmo, stepdaughter Deborah Moyer Keffer; stepson Dean Moyer, Jr. and child: Gage Moyer; along with previously listed siblings and their families.

Karyl’s wishes to be cremated and remembered, “as she was”, along with her dislike for sorrowful funeral services, has led to the decision to forego a viewing and formal services. In lieu of cards or flowers, please take a moment to leave a fond memory of Karyl for her family, which will be shared with her grandchildren, and think of her with a smile for a just moment while doing something fun or relaxing this summer. All of the help and support throughout the past 7 months has been greatly appreciated.

A portion of her ashes will be interred with her late husband Dean at the Richland cemetery in Richland, NY. Another portion may be made into a piece of jewelry and sent to Van Morrison. Won’t he be surprised…
