Joseph Eden Hewell, Jr

Joseph (Joe) Eden Hewell, Jr. of Orwell, New York went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by family, on Friday, May 17, 2024 just a few days after celebrating his 99 th birthday. Joe was born on May 11, 1925 to Joseph and Maggie (Sorrow) Hewell in Chattahoochee, Florida. After some time in college, he joined the Air Force and served from 1950 to 1954. He had a long successful career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and retired after 35 years. After retiring from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Joseph worked for the Columbus Municipal School District and the Lowndes County School District in Columbus, Mississippi for several years in their 16th-section land management division. On November 26, 1953 he married Martha Sherman Hancock and celebrated 70 years of marriage. They had three sons, Jody (Tami) Hewell of Archdale, North Carolina, Jim (Judi) Hewell of Phoenix, Arizona and Jerry (Lori) Hewell of Orwell, New York. Joe was predeceased by his father Joseph and mother, Maggie. He was survived by his wife, three sons, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, in addition to one great-grandchild on the way. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
