James Milton Herron 03/02/1936 to 03/17/2026 James Milton Herron passed away Tuesday March 17, 2026 at his home with his family at his side under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
James was born March 2, 1936 in Philadelphia, NY to Milton and Dora Owens Herron. In 1941, his family was among the 550 families displaced when Pine Camp (now Fort Drum) expanded, and they resettled on a farm in the Belleville area. He grew up there and graduated from Belleville Central School in 1954.
James married Nancy Fargo in 1957, beginning a partnership and family that would become the center of his world. He worked on the family farm for several years before putting his mechanical aptitude to work as a mechanic at Franklin Chevrolet in Pulaski, NY. He later channeled that same hands-on skill into a new role installing milking equipment for Herron Farm Supply. In his retirement years, James did yard and garden work for people in the area.
James loved gardening. He always kept a large vegetable garden and cultivated a sprawling gladiola garden for several years, selling the blooms to the local florist. He and his family sometimes took bouquets to older people in the area.
He was always willing to help others with projects. Whether solving a stubborn mechanical problem, competing fiercely in a friendly game, or showing up for someone in need, James brought the same spirit to everything he did. He was known for always finding a way forward, no matter the challenge, and for his generosity toward others.
James was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on July 1, 1962 and attended meetings with the Adams Congregation. He treasured interactions with the friends.
James is survived by his son Timothy Herron, daughter Cathy West, granddaughter Stephanie (Mark) Leuze, great grandson Tyler, sister-in-law Sandi (Doug) Austin, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy, his parents, sister Lenore, and brothers Carl, Leon, Maurice, and George.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his niece Holly for her self-sacrifice and to Kelly at Carthage Center for her support after his accident in 2024. Also to the therapists at Summit Village, the Samaritan Home Heath Team, and Hospice of Jefferson County.
James will be greatly missed.
