Elwin L. Kersey, 93, husband of the late Mildred Noble Kersey passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 at his home in Sandy Creek, NY. Born March 1, 1927 in Sandy Creek, NY, he resided most of his life in Sandy Creek. Elwin was the eldest son of the late Seymour and Rhue (Johnson) Kersey. A younger brother Richard died as a baby in 1930.
A 1945 graduate of Sandy Creek High School, Mr. Kersey volunteered (forgoing his high school graduation ceremony) to serve in the Merchant Marine in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. His mother proudly accepted his diploma. He worked for Blount Lumber Company in Lacona, NY for 38 years, retiring in 1989 as Shipping & Receiving Supervisor.
Mr. Kersey was an avid bowler, deer hunter and a life-long Yankee fan. He also took great pride in mowing his yard and tending the gardens.
Elwin was married for 69 years and with his wife Mildred had three daughters: Barbara Sellis (David) of Venice, FL, Susan Edick (Robert) of Pulaski, NY and Janet Timmerman (Art Muldoon) of Fairport, NY; five grandchildren, Rene, Rita, Tim, Amy, and Jeff; five great grandchildren and his extended family including Rand Timmerman and daughters Heidi and Miranda.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to his devoted neighbor, Pat Caster, who provided significant care and friendship during his failing health.
Spring Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sandy Creek. The family requests that donations be made in Elwin Kersey’s name to the Sandy Creek Community Park Association PO Box 22 Sandy Creek, NY 13145.
