Betty Jane (Eicholzer) Hollis Obituary
Betty Jane (Eicholzer) Hollis, of Lacona, NY, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, four days shy of her 101st birthday. Born in Syracuse in 1925 to Ernest and Bertha Eicholzer, Betty graduated from Syracuse Central High School in 1943 and graduated from the nursing program at Syracuse General Hospital in 1946. She was selected to continue her education at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where she received specialized training as a surgical nurse. She brought that expertise home to Syracuse, continuing her career at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she met her future husband, Dr. Warren L. Hollis.Their marriage in 1949 marked the beginning of a lifelong personal and professional partnership continuing the Hollis family's rural medical practice operating in Lacona since 1897.For over 40 years, Betty managed the daily operations of the practice as head nurse and bookkeeper. Patients sometimes paid with buckets of fish or bushels of corn — gestures of gratitude that spoke to the trust Betty and Warren had earned in the community. After retirement, Betty and Warren enjoyed their homes at Sandy Pond, NY, and Sarasota, FL.
Betty was predeceased by Warren in 2002. She is survived by her two daughters, Beverly Short (Dr. Walter) and Nancy Sewitch (T. Scott); grandson, W. Michael Short; granddaughter, Elizabeth Hinds (Kristopher); and her great-granddaughters.
The family would like to especially thank the dedicated caregivers who supported Betty over the last year: Marsha, Merissa, and Elaina.
A family remembrance will be held at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sandy Creek.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Woodlawn Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 178, Sandy Creek, NY 13145.
