Joseph Nellis Obituary

Joseph M. Nellis (Joe), 61 Nellis Drive, Lacona, NY passed away Monday January 29, 2018. He was 83.

Born June 28, 1934 in Pulaski, NY he was the son of the late Sumner and Reva Teachout Nellis. Joe was educated in Sandy Creek School. He married Irene Petrie of Adams Center, NY in 1952.

Joe was a man of many trades, he worked at Blount Lumber in Lacona, NY, he was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for the Town of Sandy Creek, he also worked at Schoeller Paper for several years. He served as a Special Deputy for the Oswego County Sherriff’s Dept. and the Lacona Fire Dept. in the 1960’s.

In 1970 he purchased the family farm, where he lived most of his life. After selling his dairy he worked at Sandy Creek School as Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds until his retirement in 1997. After his retirement he drove parts truck for F.X. Caprara of Pulaski.

Joe enjoyed restoring John Deere tractors and showing them at the County fair. Was a 20-year member of the 2 Cylinder Club of CNY.

Joe is survived by his wife Irene, two sons and daughters-in-laws Verne and Karen, Kasoag, NY; Joe and Vicky, Lacona, NY; two daughters and son-in-law’s Kathy and Dan Ouderkirk, of Lacona, NY; Kris and BJ Bacon, Zephyrhills, FL; nine grandchildren; Angie, FL; Jason, Lacona; Derek, Watertown; Emily and Lyle ConnorAdams, NY; Kyle and Claire Nellis, Missouri; Stacy and Jim White, Pulaski, NY; Carrie and Jim Raiti ,Lacona, NY; Cindy, FL; Anna, Redfield; Six great grandchildren; four step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren. One brother David, Fulton, NY and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Sumner and Reva, two sisters Rita and Joyce.

Per Joe’s request there will be no calling hours, private funeral at the convenience of the family. There will be a Celebration of Life early summer of this year.

Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to NOCA Ambulance or Lacona Fire dept.
